Canada Wildrye

Canada Wildrye

(Elymus canadensis)
Plant Type:
Grasses
Canada wildrye is a cool season perrenial bunchgrass found throughout south Texas. It is commonly found in riparian corridors, and beneath canopies of large trees such as sugar hackberry or live oak. This grass is important winter forage for livestock in many areas of Texas, and also provides forage for white-tailed deer and other wildlife. The USDA-NRCS E. “Kika” de la Garza Plant Materials Center has a release named Lavaca Germplasm Canada, and excellent plant for cool season restoration plantings, improvement of forage resources, or as a winter cover crop in south Texas.
