Catclaw is a common component of South Texas brushlands, and is found in a variety habitats and soil types, frequently in chaparral on the Rio Grande Plains, Trans-Pecos, and Edwards Plateau; infrequent in the southern Coastal Prairie. The seeds produced are eaten by bobwhite and scaled quail, white-tailed deer and cattle browse the foliage.
