Shortspike windmillgrass is a warm season perennial grass found throughout South Texas. It is a naturally occurring hybrid between Chloris cucullata and Chloris verticillata. This grass is found in a variety of habitat types. Common use for conservation plantings include grassed waterways, streamside buffers, filter strips, and pond embankments. Shortspike has shown promise in being able to establish in stands of buffelgrass, and competes well with it. Welder is a South Texas release of this species available for planting.
