Research Partner Spotlight: Robert J. Kleberg, Jr. and Helen C. Kleberg Foundation | Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute

Facilities, as well as, seed evaluation and seed increase plots on the Texas A&M University-Kingsville campus are essential to develop native seed sources. With the help of the Kleberg Foundation, Texas Native Seeds has dozens of native seed releases that are being produced commercially and available for land managers to use in native habitat restoration.

Blackburnian warbler: South Texas is a funnel for migratory birds that flow through the region and fan out across North America every spring. In the autumn, these same birds and their offspring travel back through South Texas to wintering areas further south. The Robert J. Kleberg, Jr. and Helen C. Kleberg Foundation has supported research that shows the number of migrating birds moving through South Texas is greater than any place in North America.

Black-bellied plover: The Texas coast is home to many species of wetland and wading birds. Grants from the Robert J. Kleberg, Jr. and Helen C. Kleberg Foundation have enabled CKWRI scientists to learn more about the importance of Texas wetlands to these diverse bird communities.

Locally adapted native seeds are necessary to complete successful restoration across Texas. Such seeds were not available commercially until support from the Kleberg Foundation helped launch South Texas Natives. Now landowners and agencies are able to restore over 50,000 acres annually with native plants and maintain the conservation value of those areas.
