Shrubby Blue Sage is a minor component of the mixed-brush chaparral thickets and is fairly common throughout South Texas.  Shrubby Blue Sage can be found in shallow, rocky, sandy, gravelly, or limestone hillsides or brushy slopes in the Rio Grande Plains.  White-tailed deer browse the leaves and small mammals use the shrub for cover.
