Scarlet Pea is a low-growing forb found abundant on sandy loam and deep sandy soils in the Rio Grande Plains and Coastal Prairies. The leaves and stems are good forage for white-tailed deer, Rio Grande turkeys and cattle. The seeds are occasionally consumed by bobwhite quail and doves.
