
Ecological Mechanisms Underlying Small Wild Cat Movements & Behavior of Ocelots and Bobcats Near Roads
Position Description: The Tewes Wild Cat Lab of the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute at Texas A&M University-Kingsville invites applications from highly motivated individuals to pursue a Ph.D. degree in our Small Wild Cat Movement Ecology Lab. Students will study ocelots and bobcats to investigate: (1) biotic and abiotic factors that influence movement of ocelot and bobcat, and (2) comparative variations in behavioral patterns for sympatric ocelot and bobcats, particularly locations near and distant from roads. Successful applicants will participate in all aspects of field research for both wild cats. Data will be used by the successful applicant for their dissertation. Students will be expected to publish manuscripts in nationally recognized peer-reviewed journals and present results at national and international conferences.
Location: Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Kingsville, Texas (30 miles south of Corpus Christi, Texas). Research will be conducted on large historic private ranches in South Texas.
Qualifications Required:
• B.S. and M.S. in ecology, wildlife science, biology, or closely related fields.
• A strong work ethic, good verbal and written communication skills, and ability to work independently and as a productive member of a research team.
• Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.25.
• Competitive applicants will ideally have coding and statistical experience in R or similar programs.
Stipend/Salary: $2,800/month stipend plus benefits (medical package available after completion of waiting period). Nonresident tuition will be waived, and instead the lower resident tuition and fees will apply. Partial resident tuition fee assistance may be provided based on availability of funds.
