Dr. Malachowski is an applied quantitative ecologist whose work bridges field-based data collection with robust statistical modeling to inform the conservation and management of wildlife populations and their habitats. His research focuses on understanding how factors such as weather variability and anthropogenic impacts influence the population dynamics, behavior, and movement ecology of species of concern. To address these ecological challenges, Dr. Malachowski develops and applies advanced statistical frameworks, including multistate capture-mark-recapture designs and integrated population models. A core component of his program is highly collaborative, cooperator-driven research that provides state, federal, tribal, and international agencies with the science-based foundation needed to make effective management and policy decisions.
Dr. Malachowski grew up exploring the forests and fields of eastern Pennsylvania and earned his B.A. in both Biology and Environmental Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his M.S. and Ph.D. in Wildlife Science at Oregon State University, where his research explored the behavioral ecology, movement, and population dynamics of the federally endangered Koloa maoli (Hawaiian Duck). Prior to joining Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Dr. Malachowski was a postdoctoral researcher at Colorado State University, where he developed demographic models for a diverse suite of coastal and marine species, including Mottled Ducks, Black-footed and Laysan Albatrosses, and leatherback and loggerhead sea turtles. With over 20 years of field research experience spanning the country and the globe, he brings a practical perspective to his quantitative work, ensuring his research and recommendations remain firmly grounded in the realities of applied conservation.
