Ruellia is a low-growing, erect, perennial forb found commonly on loam or clay soils in prairies, open brushy areas, arroyos, creeks and river bottoms in the Rio Grande Plains and Coastal Prairies. The leaves provide forage for white-tailed deer and the the seeds are consumed by bobwhite quail.
