Tornillo is a low undershrub with slender, wiry stems and long, gray thorns.  Tornillo is frequent on clay soils in the Rio Grande Plains, especially common along the Coastal Prairies of South Texas.  Tornillo is a low plant and is usually overlooked, white-tailed deer occasionally browse the leaves.
