Vine mesquite is a widespread native grass found in riparian areas, along stream banks, swales and ramaderos throughout south Texas, commonly on clay and clay loam soils. Vine mesquite spreads vegetatively by above ground stolons that are commonly 5-10’ in length. Seed is produced throughout the year, but seed fill and germination is usually low. Vine mesquite provides fair-good forage for livestock, and has good potential for propagation by sprigs or vegetative cuttings. Vine mesquite is very competitive with several non-native grasses.
